The usual suspects were to the fore at the opening round of the Tri NZ Junior Series in Tauranga on Sunday – but not without feeling a little heat from a couple of breakout performers.

Finnley Oliver (Triathlon Tauranga) and Filip Martin (Manawatu Triathlon Club) won the U19 sprint and U16 super sprint races at Triathlon Tauranga’s “Tinman” while the Canterbury Triathlon Club duo of Neve McKenzie and Sophie Lampe repeated the dose in the respective girls races.

Each scored the maximum 40 points heading into the second and penultimate round of the Tri NZ Junior Series, the Canterbury Triathlon Club-hosted Pak ‘n Save Triathlon Festival at Lake Ru in Harewood on December 15.

The final round will be held as part of the Napier Triathlon Festival, incorporating the opening round of the World Triathlon Cup season, on February 23.

An athlete’s two best performances count towards the national titles.

Oliver, Gordon-Glassford and Ball put the hammer down on the run.

U19 – OLIVER GETS HIS REVENGE WHILE MCKENZIE PIPS HER PAL
As a two-time Junior World Championships representative, Oliver’s victory in 56:12 came as no surprise and leaves him in pole-position for the title.

Still, the Craig Kirkwood-coached prodigy was made to work for it, beating Joshua Gordon-Glassford (Auckland City Tri Club) by 45 seconds over the 750m swim, 20km bike, 5km run. Alec Ball (Manawatu Triathlon Club) was third a further 58secs adrift.

Oliver had his revenge after being pipped by Gordon-Glassford in the 3000m race at the Auckland City Athletics Race Night earlier in the week – 8:42:99 plays 8:43:23. It was the same Mt Smart race where Tauranga 15-year-old Sam Ruthe set the world’s best time for a 15-year-old, and broke the NZ U17 and U18 records  to boot, with a remarkable time of 8:09:68.

Gordon-Glassford leads on the first lap of the bike from Oliver and Ball.

Gordon-Glassford has also been working hard on his swim and that paid dividends at Tinman while Ball also stepped up despite working his way back from a foot injury.

McKenzie, who hails from Blenheim, beat her St. Kentigern College team-mate and bestie Dorothy Anderson by over a minute in the U19 girls race, taking advantage of the pedal power that will see her ride for a cycling team in Europe next year.

Anderson, the sister of former NZ Schools champion Coen, in turn had a minute to spare over third placed Charlotte Chiles (Canterbury Triathlon Club).

Manawatu Triathlon Club’s Hayley Cornwall, who made her debut at the World Junior Championships in Torremolinos in late October, did the swim as part of a relay team at Tinman but did not race the U19s girls individual as she comes back from injury.

U16 – MARTIN ENHANCES FAMILY NAME AS LAMPE PICKS UP WHERE SHE LEFT OFF
Another celebrated tri family was celebrating when Martin won the U16 boys super sprint (300m swim, 13km bike, 3km run) in 39:41 – edging William Moulder by a mere eight seconds in the closest of all Sunday’s races at Tinman. Moulder’s Auckland City Tri Club mate Jackson Pinique was just a further four seconds adrift in third.

Martin hails from a noted Manawatu triathlon family including brother David who switched allegiance from New Zealand to the Czech Republic.

Lampe dominated the U16 girls race, as she did last year’s series, winning in 43:13 ahead of the Auckland City Tri Club duo of Mia Collins (43:50) and Ava Van Rij (44:48).

There were a host of disqualifications in the race caused by course confusion when a number of runners, just adrift of the leaders, turned early for the run home.
