Hayden Wilde’s recent performance at the Olympic Triathlon was nothing short of amazing. Sportsmanship personified, Wilde showed what it meant to represent New Zealand at the highest level. Wilde grew up in Whakatane and as a child had a keen interest in swimming, biking and running (as well as all things adventuring!). From small-town roots to the Global stage, Triathlon has provided the pathway and it can for you too!

Tri NZ has pathways for all young people who are interested to try, compete, or excel in this great sport.

Tamariki (primary school)

Water, Wheels, Fun! is a school-based programme designed to introduce Triathlon to primary school students, with opportunities to then have a go at a local kids Triathlon event. It’s a fun way to be creative, keep active, and grow stronger together all while achieving the objectives of the New Zealand Curriculum. If you’re a primary school teacher, or would like to see this programme run at your school, download the resource HERE.

Rangatahi (intermediate and secondary school)

Whether it’s eSport, a local Triathlon event, or the official New Zealand Schools event, there are many opportunities to be involved in Triathlon for intermediate and high school students as a one-off experience or through our Secondary Schools Programme. Ride with rangatahi from around NZ and the world in the Youth eSport Series, enter an event with your mates as a team, or grow your swim, bike and run skills to complete one yourself! Development Pathway

Take it to the next level. If you are wanting to hone your triathlon skills, race at a more elite level, or find out how to get selected for development squads then make sure to enter the Tri NZ Suzuki Junior Series happening this summer. Three races across both islands make up the series, with the top 2 races counting toward the overall series champion. This series is to open to both under 16 and under 19 athletes and has been created to encourage the development of our promising athletes and celebrate their successes. Full event information and entry links can be found HERE.

So what are you waiting for? Become a part of this great sport that’s all about growing stronger together.
