Tri NZ wish to engage with a passionate and skilled individual to coordinate the Regional Youth Academy development for Canterbury and the upper South Island region.


Applicants must be an accredited coach of Triathlon NZ, have demonstrated a commitment to encouraging and supporting young athletes to develop skills to compete at national (and international) level/s and have the ability to build relationships with multi- and single-sport clubs and schools.


If you have a passion for the sport of Triathlon, strong leadership and coordination skills, an understanding of athlete development coaching, clear planning skills and open communication and collaboration skills we would welcome an expression of interest from you.


Key responsibilities and outputs:

  1. Demonstrate leadership of athlete development throughout the Region, at all times promoting a safe and challenging environment for young people to grow.
  2. Organize and deliver 2 to 3 RYA camps, typically spanning a weekend, engaging athletes throughout the region, and in doing so provide fun and social group environments for training, for athletes to challenge each other and learn.
  3. Coordinate RYA-athlete participation / representation in National Junior Events.
  4. Scout and attract appropriate young athletes from throughout the Region to the RYA, by building relationships with multi- and single-sport clubs and schools, having presence at regional triathlon and single-sport events, and generally promoting the RYA.
  5. Collaborate with the High Performance Athlete Development Leader and fellow RYA Coordinators
  6. Champion Tri NZ’s HP Strategy and contribute to its continued development.
  7. Facilitate learning opportunities to teach the learned habits of excellence and an understanding of what it takes to succeed in Triathlon, with development athletes.
  8. Contribute to the Athlete Development Communication plan to help make regional activities more visible.
  9. Provide an annual calendar of regional development opportunities.
  10. Contribute to building best practice resources.
  11. Contribute to teaching clubs, coaches and parents best practice for athlete development training.
  12. Help advocate for age and stage appropriate events with the region.
  13. Contribute to, at minimum one National Athlete Development camp in Cambridge.
  14. Engage in coach development to ensure constant learning and innovation for yourself and others including having an active IPP in place.
  15. Perform appropriate Health and Safety procedures at Regional Camps, as outlined by Triathlon NZ.
